Off-grid
Runs your home entirely from panels and a battery bank, with no grid at all. Sized for the worst week of the year, not the average day — that is why true off-grid costs the most per usable kWh. Best for sites where a connection is unavailable or ruinously expensive.
Hybrid
Grid-tied when power is present, seamless battery backup when it is not, with programmable priorities (solar first, battery evenings, grid last). This flexibility is why hybrids dominate markets with unreliable grids. Cost sits between the other two; make sure its surge rating covers your motor loads.
The mistake to avoid
Buying on-grid to save money in an outage-prone area, planning to "add batteries later". Plain on-grid inverters have no battery port — later means a second system or a replacement. If outages matter at all, price the hybrid honestly on day one.
