K-Electric Net Metering: A Karachi Consumer's Guide
K-Electric is Pakistan's only vertically-integrated private utility, and its net-metering workflow differs in useful ways from the government DISCOs: applications are tracked through its own portal and customer centres, and Karachi's coastal climate adds a couple of technical considerations worth knowing before you file.
Before you apply
- Your connection should be three-phase; if you are on single-phase, ask K-Electric about upgrading first — many Karachi homes qualify.
- Use an AEDB-certified installer experienced specifically with K-Electric cases; their inspection checklists are enforced strictly.
- Karachi's salty, humid air corrodes cheap connectors and earthing joints — insist on marine-grade lugs and verified earthing below 5 ohms; inspections check this.
The K-Electric process
- Installer files your application with CNIC, recent bill and single-line diagram.
- K-Electric reviews the file and schedules a site inspection.
- On clearance, a demand notice is issued for the bidirectional meter and processing charges — amounts change over time, so confirm the current figure in writing.
- The bidirectional (green) meter is installed and your interconnection agreement takes effect; export credits appear on subsequent bills.
Sizing advice specific to Karachi
Karachi averages roughly 5.3 peak sun hours — among the best of Pakistan's big cities — but under net billing, exports earn little. Size near your daytime usage, run heavy flexible loads in the solar window, and remember sea-facing roofs need more frequent panel cleaning to hold their output.
